5-Day Grand Sahara Off-Road Expedition from Merzouga

After breakfast, the expedition continues from Ramlia across one of the wildest and quietest parts of the Moroccan Sahara. Today’s off-road route heads toward Sidi Ali Tafraout, a remote desert area known for its open landscapes, rocky tracks, and true expedition feeling far from the usual tourist roads. This section of the journey is ideal for travelers who want to experience the raw beauty, silence, and scale of the desert.

As you travel deeper into southern Morocco, the scenery changes between stony hammada, dry riverbeds, wide plains, and isolated desert stretches with almost no sign of modern life. There will be time for scenic stops, photos, and short breaks along the way, with your driver-guide choosing the best pistes according to weather, sand conditions, and route safety.

Later in the day, the route continues toward M’Hamid, the last village before the great desert of Erg Chegaga. Arriving in this historic Sahara gateway gives the expedition a new atmosphere, with palm groves, traditional desert village life, and the feeling that the biggest dunes are now close ahead.

By late afternoon, you arrive in or near M’Hamid, where you can relax and enjoy another peaceful evening on the edge of the desert.

After breakfast in or near M’Hamid, the expedition leaves the last village behind and heads deeper into the Sahara toward the great dunes of Erg Chegaga. Although the driving distance is shorter than the previous days, this part of the journey is one of the highlights of the entire route. The tracks become sandier and the feeling of true desert travel becomes stronger as you move farther away from settlements and paved roads.

Along the way, you cross open desert scenery, small dune sections, and remote sandy pistes with time to stop for photos and to enjoy the silence of the Sahara. As the dunes begin to rise on the horizon, the landscape becomes more dramatic and more untouched, offering a very different atmosphere from the busier areas around Merzouga.

By the afternoon, you arrive at Erg Chegaga, one of the wildest and most impressive dune areas in Morocco. Here you can relax at camp, walk on the dunes, enjoy panoramic views, and watch the sunset over the sand sea.

After sunrise and breakfast in Erg Chegaga, the expedition continues west across some of the most spectacular off-road terrain in southern Morocco. Leaving the great dunes behind, you drive through open desert tracks toward Lake Iriki, a vast dried lakebed that creates one of the most memorable landscapes of the journey. This stage feels wide, wild, and remote, with huge horizons and a real sense of freedom.

Crossing Lake Iriki is one of the highlights of the expedition. The flat open ground, changing light, and dramatic desert scenery make this section especially rewarding for photography and for travelers who enjoy the feeling of true exploration. Along the way, there is time for short breaks, scenic stops, and to appreciate the silence and scale of this unique part of the Sahara.

Later in the day, the route continues toward Foum Zguid, the gateway between the deep desert and the road network of southern Morocco. Arriving here brings a striking contrast after the isolation of the previous days, while still keeping the atmosphere of adventure that defines this Grand Sahara crossing.
